When a sewer line is too far gone to line, pipe bursting replaces it with new pipe along the same path using two small pits instead of a trench. Here is how it works and when it is the right call.
What pipe bursting does
Pipe bursting is trenchless replacement rather than trenchless repair. A cone-shaped bursting head, slightly larger than the old pipe, is pulled through the existing sewer line by a cable and a hydraulic winch. As it moves, it splits the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil, and a new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe attached behind the head follows it into the space just opened. The old pipe is not removed; it is shattered and pushed aside, and the new pipe occupies the same alignment.
The result is a brand-new pipe with no joints along its length, no dependence on the condition of the old one, and, if you want it, a larger diameter than what was there before. When a line cannot be lined
Lining is usually the first choice because it is less disruptive and uses smaller access points. Bursting takes over when the camera shows conditions a liner cannot fix.
- A collapsed section. A liner needs a host pipe to press against. If part of the pipe has caved in, the bursting head simply drives through the debris.
- A long or deep belly. A liner follows the sag. A bursting head follows the sag too, so on its own bursting does not fix a belly either, but the new pipe can be laid to grade if the low section is excavated at one of the pits. On a lateral where the belly is near the house or near the main, that is often the practical answer.
- Orangeburg that has gone flat. Orangeburg that still holds shape can be lined. Orangeburg that has delaminated into an oval or a slot cannot, and it bursts easily.
- An undersized line. Some older homes have 3-inch laterals, or a 4-inch line serving an added unit. Bursting can upsize to 4 or 6 inches in the same pull.
- Multiple bad offsets. One stepped joint can be dug and spot-fixed before lining. Six of them along a run in expansive soil usually means the whole alignment has moved, and a new pipe is more sensible than a liner folded at every joint.
How the pull works
Two pits are dug: a launch pit where the new pipe enters, and a receiving pit where the winch sits and the head comes out. The new HDPE pipe is fused into one continuous length above ground, using a heat plate that melts the ends and presses them together. Fused HDPE has no gaskets or glue joints; the fused joint is as strong as the pipe wall. The pipe is then attached behind the bursting head, the cable is fed through the old line from the receiving pit to the launch pit, and the winch pulls the assembly through.
A residential lateral pull takes an hour or two once everything is set up. Most of the day is pits, fusing, and connections. The new pipe is tied into the house side and the main or property-line side with mechanical couplings or a fused transition, then the camera goes through to verify, and the pits are backfilled and compacted.
Upsizing
Because the head is what sizes the hole, the new pipe can be one size larger than the old with a standard head, and sometimes two sizes with a larger head and more winch force. The soil matters. Sandy fill and the alluvial soils common across the inland basin burst easily. Dense clay takes more force. Access pits and what to expect on your property
This is where bursting differs most from lining. Lining can often be done entirely through existing cleanouts. Bursting needs two holes big enough for a person to work in, typically a few feet square, at each end of the run being replaced. On a lateral that means one pit near the house (or where the pipe exits the slab) and one near the property line or the street connection.
- If the property-line end is under a public sidewalk or in the street, the city generally requires an encroachment permit and traffic control, and the connection to the main is done to their standard. Your contractor handles this, but it adds a day.
- If the house end is under a slab, the pit is inside, which means cutting the slab in one spot rather than trenching across the floor.
- Hardscape over the pits (pavers, stamped concrete, a walkway) will be cut and patched. Everything between the pits stays undisturbed, which is the whole point when the run crosses a driveway, a pool deck, or a neighbor's easement.
One caution: bursting displaces soil outward. Other utilities running close and parallel to the sewer (a gas service, a water line, an irrigation main) can be pushed or cracked. Ask how the contractor located nearby utilities and what clearance they found before agreeing to a burst.
Bursting versus open trench replacement
If the run is short, shallow, and under lawn, digging it up and laying new pipe is straightforward and there is no reason to avoid it. Bursting earns its place when the trench would run under something expensive to replace, when the pipe is deep, or when the water table is high.
