A camera inspection is the first step in every honest sewer repair. Here is what the video actually shows, where it falls short, and how to read the report you get back.

What a sewer camera inspection is

A sewer camera is a small waterproof lens on the end of a stiff push cable, with LED lighting around the lens and a radio transmitter (a sonde) just behind it. The technician feeds it into your sewer lateral through a cleanout, a pulled toilet, or a roof vent, and watches the picture on a monitor at the surface while the cable counter records how far in the head has traveled. The whole thing is recorded, and you should get a copy.

The reason this matters is simple. Nobody can see a buried pipe. Without video, a sewer diagnosis is a guess dressed up as an estimate, and the size of the guess tends to grow with the size of the job. Insist on a recorded sewer camera inspection before anyone talks about lining, bursting, or digging. A contractor who quotes a full repair without first putting a camera in the line is asking you to pay for their assumptions.

What the camera shows well

  • Pipe material. Vitrified clay shows as short segments with a joint every few feet, often with a visible hub. Cast iron looks dark and rough, sometimes with scale hanging from the crown. ABS and PVC are smooth with long runs between joints. Orangeburg looks like layered black cardboard and often has a flattened, oval profile.
  • Root intrusion. Fine hair roots at a joint, or a full mat that stops the camera. In older Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana tracts with clay laterals and mature street trees, this is the single most common finding.
  • Offset joints and cracks. A step where one section has settled below the next, or a longitudinal crack running with the pipe.
  • Standing water and bellies. When the lens dips under water and stays there for several feet, the pipe has a low spot. The counter tells you how long the sag is.
  • Grease, scale, and debris. The general condition of the walls, and whether cleaning is needed before anything else can be judged.
  • Location. The sonde lets a locator on the surface find the head and mark its position and depth with paint. That is how a contractor knows a problem is under the driveway rather than the lawn, and how deep it sits.

What the camera cannot tell you

This is the part that gets skipped in sales conversations. A camera looks at the inside surface of the pipe. It does not see through the wall, and it does not measure anything with precision.

  • It cannot see outside the pipe. A void in the soil around a leaking joint, or a root ball that has not yet pushed inside, is invisible.
  • It cannot measure a belly. Standing water tells you there is a sag. It does not tell you the exact depth of the sag, which is what decides whether a liner will follow the dip or whether the line needs to be replaced.
  • It cannot see through water or debris. If the line is full of grease or backed up, the picture is brown and useless until the line is cleaned. Some contractors do a quick cable clearing first so the camera can pass; that is normal.
  • It cannot grade cast iron accurately. Scale on the crown can hide how much wall is actually left. In coastal cities where cast iron under slab has corroded from the outside as well as the inside, a pipe can look tolerable on camera and still be paper-thin.
  • It cannot always reach the main. A collapsed section, a hard offset, or a tight 90-degree fitting can stop the camera. When that happens, the report should say where it stopped and why, not pretend the rest is fine.

Ask for these three things: the full video file (not a clip), the footage counter visible on screen, and the surface paint marks left where the locator found the problem. If the report is a single paragraph with no footage numbers, ask for more.

How to read the report you get

A good inspection report is short and specific. It names the access point used, the material found, the distance to each defect in feet, what the defect is, and where the camera ended. It should also say what could not be seen and why. A report that says "line is in bad shape, recommend full replacement" without footage numbers is not a report; it is a sales note.

When two contractors give you different opinions, compare their videos, not their pitches. The pipe does not change between visits. If one video shows a clean line to the main and the other stops at forty feet, someone either cleaned the line first or did not push far enough, and both of those are worth asking about. Getting more than one look from trenchless sewer contractors serving Orange County is reasonable on any job larger than a spot repair.

Why the inspection comes before any quote

Every trenchless method has conditions. Lining needs a pipe that still holds its shape, a run that can be cleaned to bare wall, and a known count of branch connections to reinstate. Bursting needs a clear path for the pull head and access pits at both ends. A point repair needs a defect that is actually isolated, not the worst of many. None of those decisions can be made without seeing the pipe. The video tells the contractor which method fits, how much material is needed, where to dig the access pits, and whether the job is one day or three.

It also protects you afterward. Once a liner is installed or a new pipe pulled in, the same camera goes back through to prove the work. The post-repair video should show a smooth continuous wall, every branch connection opened cleanly, and the head passing all the way to the city main. Keep both videos. They are your record if a problem ever comes up with a buyer, an insurer, or the city.

When to schedule one even if nothing is wrong

Three situations justify a camera on a line that seems fine. Buying a house built before about 1975 anywhere in the county, because clay, cast iron, and Orangeburg all show their age in the same decade. Planning a remodel that adds a bathroom or moves the kitchen, because it is cheaper to fix the lateral before the new slab or hardscape goes in. And a history of slow drains that a cable clears for a few months at a time, because the roots that keep coming back are growing through a joint that is only getting worse. How long does a sewer camera inspection take?

Usually under an hour for a typical residential lateral, including locating the problem from the surface. If the line has to be cleared first so the camera can pass, add the cleaning time.

Do I need a cleanout to get a camera in?

No, but it helps. Without a cleanout the technician can go through a pulled toilet or a roof vent. If you are having work done anyway, adding a two-way cleanout near the house makes every future inspection and cleaning easier.

Can the camera tell me exactly how much pipe is left in cast iron?

Not reliably. It can show scale, pitting, and channeling in the bottom of the pipe, but it cannot measure remaining wall thickness. Heavily scaled cast iron in a coastal home should be treated as suspect even if the picture looks passable.

Should I get my own inspection before calling for repair quotes?

It is a fair approach. An independent video gives you something to hand to each contractor so their quotes are based on the same evidence. Most contractors will still want to run their own camera before committing to a method.

What if the camera cannot get past a blockage?

The report should say where it stopped and what stopped it. Often the line is cleared with a cable or a jetter and the camera is run again. If the camera stops at a collapse, that section will need bursting or replacement rather than lining.
