Hydro jetting cleans a sewer line with high-pressure water instead of a cutting cable. It is both a standalone cleaning service and the mandatory first step before lining, and there are pipes it should never be used on.
What hydro jetting actually is
A jetter is a pump, a hose reel, and a nozzle. The pump pushes water down the hose at a few thousand pounds per square inch. The nozzle has one or more forward-facing jets that cut into whatever is ahead and several rear-facing jets that pull the hose forward and flush debris back toward the access point. The technician feeds the hose in from a cleanout, works it to the far end of the run, and then draws it back slowly while the rear jets scour the pipe wall.
The difference from a cable machine (the drum-and-blade "snake") is what gets left behind. A cable bores a hole through a blockage. A jetter removes the material from the wall. Roots, grease, and scale: three different problems

Why jetting comes before lining
A cured-in-place liner bonds to whatever surface it is pressed against. If that surface is a layer of grease, the liner is bonded to grease. If a root stub is left at a joint, the liner has a bump there. If a scale nodule is left on cast iron, the liner has a hard point that can become a leak path or a snag. So the line has to be cleaned to bare wall, then camera-inspected to confirm it, before any liner goes in.
That inspection after jetting is also the first time the true condition of the pipe is visible. When not to jet
This is the part a jetting-only company may not volunteer. High-pressure water will find any weakness in a pipe.
- Orangeburg. Bituminous fiber pipe is layered like a paper tube. Jetting delaminates it. A pipe that was still holding shape and could have been lined can be turned into a bursting job by one aggressive cleaning pass. Orangeburg should be cleaned gently with a cable and low pressure, or not at all beyond what is needed for the camera.
- Thin cast iron. In coastal homes, cast iron under slab may have corroded from the outside as well as the inside. Descaling a pipe that has an intact-looking crown and a paper-thin floor can punch through the bottom. The contractor should start with lower pressure, check on camera, and stop if the floor is channeled through.
- Pipe with a known collapse or void. Water at pressure will wash soil out through the break and enlarge the void under your slab or driveway.
- Unknown material with a blind run. Jetting a line nobody has looked at is a guess. A quick camera pass first is cheap insurance.

What jetting cannot do
Jetting is cleaning. It does not repair anything. It does not close a joint, straighten an offset, lift a belly, or add wall thickness. A line that is jetted every year for roots is a line with a structural problem that is being managed rather than fixed. What to expect on the day
